By "adult protagonists" I'm not suggesting the need for incredibly dark themes or extreme violence. There have been several interesting TV series created about other child-focused franchises but aimed at adult fans: Tokusatsu GaGaGa for tokusatsu fans, Looking for Magical Doremi and Adult Pretty Cure '23 for magical girl fans, and PokéTsume for Pokémon fans. These series tend to focus on how childhood heroes and idealism can help adults thrive as well.
Last Evolution: Kizuna was interpreted by many English-speaking fans to be sending the complete opposite message: that being an adult means losing connection to your cherished childhood memories. I think it would be interesting and beneficial to have a story about adults reconnecting with their forgotten childhood Digimon partners and pursuing their ignored or discarded ideals (their "Crests") to bring their lives meaning...as well as save the world.

Kizuna has been misunderstood because of the official translation (and by extent, dubs) messing things up to the point it gave the wrong idea. It was a very good movie to me, especially about its themes of not forcing your growth and not getting stuck in the nostalgia from childhood.
The new movie also had a similar message from the original 02 TV series -- to not live stuck in the past and move forward.
I'd like something like Kizuna and The Beginning, but with a brand new cast and no ties to any previous TV series. I'm waiting for Seekers to be finished so I can finally read it calmly (I don't like to read novels while they're still ongoing, sorry...)

I agree about wanting a fresh setting and cast of characters for the story. If adulthood events are tied to a childhood adventure then that could be explored with flashbacks, like how Tri used a flashback to show how the four Dark Masters were sealed away.
Also yes, it's hard to find a balance between embracing childhood interests and growing as an adult. The balance point is finding how to use those interests to fuel one's growth: becoming the hero you longed to be as a child.

I like the idea of varying age groups. I feel like interactions between Digimon and humans have been very limited. People tend to have varying levels of imagination, and to insinuate its absence with age would be incorrect.
